A room can be (and should be!) more than just four walls and a ceiling. There are so many other ways to add interest to a room other than just furniture and decor.
A relatively easy way to make your room more interesting is to add decorative mouldings.
Mouldings come in a variety of types.
Moulding Types
Some of types of moulding are:
- Baseboards: Cover space where floor and wall meets
- Crown moulding: Covers space where wall and ceiling meet. Not common in every house, but is a much-desired touch
- Chair rail: Original purpose is to prevent chairs from damaging the wall. Now they’re primarily used for decorative purposes
- Case moulding: Used around chairs and windows
- Panel moulding: For decorative purposes. Arranged in squares and rectangles to create picture frame-like shapes on the wall (We did an entire post tutorial for How to Add Picture Frame Moulding!)
- Medallions: Decorative moulding that goes around a light fixture
Today we’re focused on the much loved ceiling medallion!
What is a Ceiling Medallion?
Ceiling medallions are decorative moulding that typically go around a light fixture. Ceiling medallions have been around for a long time. They first came about in the early 1800s in formal rooms. They served multiple purposes of being decorative and also covering soot around the light.
In older days they were typically made out of plaster. Today they’re most commonly made of lightweight, durable materials like polyurethane.
Now ceiling medallions are just used for decorative purposes, accentuating a light, and adding interest to a likely otherwise plain ceiling.
How to Hang a Ceiling Medallion
Hanging a ceiling medallion turns out to be pretty easy! Here are the typical steps:
- If you plan to paint your medallion, start by painting it first before it’s hanging on the ceiling. Allow to dry before moving to the next step.
- If you have an existing light fixture hanging, remove it. Some medallions are split in half, however, so that the light fixture doesn’t need removed!
- Place some construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails) generously on the back of the medallion.
- Place the medallion on the ceiling where you intend to hang it.
- Install a few finishing nails in the medallion to make sure that it stays on the ceiling. Make sure to be very careful around electrical wiring.
- Install the light fixture. You may need longer screws than the light fixture comes with due to the extra space of the medallion between the ceiling and the light fixture.
- Finish the medallion hanging by caulking around the edges.
And you’re done!
